1. TUED Global Forum: The “Yellow Vests”: What’s Happening in France? Thursday, December 20th, 1000-1130hrs, Eastern US

What’s happening in France? Why did energy unions call a strike in support of the Yellow Vests? What does it mean for Europe’s unions and the struggle for energy democracy?

Please RSVP by emailing Irene Shen at: IreneTUED@gmail.com. Unions and allies from France have been invited. A full agenda will be sent out in the coming days. Find the local time for this discussion.

Background: The “Yellow Vests” movement in France has forced the Macron government to suspend the “carbon tax” on fuel. It has also issued 64 “People’s Directives,” one that states, “Since the price of gas and electricity has increased since privatization, we want them to become public again and that prices fall significantly.” The 64 demands of the Yellow Vests can be found on the TUED website.

Union support for the “gilets jaunes” has grown, and the largest trade union center, the CGT, has called a national day of strike action for tomorrow (Friday, December 14th). Energy unions began a two-day strike today.

Please join us for the discussion next Thursday!
